Nilgiri Mountain Railway Connecting Ooty by Rail

About Nilgiri Mountain Railway

Connecting Ooty with the broad gauge, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway does have a main role to play. The only way a tourist can reach by rail from Mettupalayam Station which falls on the broad gauge is via Nilgiri Mountain Railway which is a declared World Heritage Site of India. Probably one of the oldest Mountain Railways of India, Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the charm of Ooty. This miracle of engineering, the train is combination of blue and cream color with wooden coaches and large windows to have a greater view of the moutains and streams this mountain railway passes by. The Nilgiri Toy Train as it is often called, connects Mettupalayam with Ooty by covering the strtche of 46 km in around 4 and half hours. No wonder its one of the slowest mountain railways, but the only reason for so is the safety concerns of passengers. Since the train hauls upon the steepy and curvy hills with just a speed of 10.4 km per hour. In all this toy train of Nilgiri has to cover almost 208 curves and 13 tunnels and thus tries to reach us safe by going slow.

The Niligiri Mountian Railway halts at five stations between the Mettupalayam and Coonoor Route, with the stations been Kallar, Adderley, Hill Grove, Runnymede and Kateri. The train offers its passengers a great view to watch by as it passes over rich rice fields, tea plantations, green steepy hills and small streams passing by. A great journey to remember.
